Many European tourist may ask themselves: Is it possible to receive VAT refunds on sales tax paid for goods on a shopping spree during a US vacation? The answer is NO. The United States of America don’t offer refunds like other countries, i.e. European Union, Thailand or South Africa. Sales taxes are levied by US states and not the federal tax authorities, so they actuallly just have a sales tax and not VAT. If you wish to save on New York or New Jersey sales tax you can try to mailorder goods from other US states like California or Florida to your NY hotel room. However, you may get charged for shipping and handling and those expenses may be much higher than the actual sales tax. And you will miss out on a true American shopping experience in one of the great Buffalo Shopping Malls.
